Since its founding the Fotohof Gallery always has been an artists´ association; now Fotohof is proud to present two alternative artists´ associations from France: Glassbox from Paris and La Station 2 from Nice. Curator of this exhibition is Austrian art historian Sabine Schaschl who has been closely watching new artistic tendencies in France over the past years.
"Alternative spaces" - a phrase coined in the to describe places which sought to offer an alternative to institutional now seems somewhat antiquated as a concept in the late nineties ; these alternative spaces, often directed by their initiators and by artists, now exist on an equal par with established institutions and can be considered as "alternative" only in the sense of "different". The conditions under which these associations exist in France differ from the conditions in other countries because of the nature of governmental support for the arts in France; a healthy dose of irony and humor seems to be necessary if one is confronted with this situation; the french expression "clin d´il" - "wink of the eye" or "reference to..." seems to describe this situation quite well.
The exhibitions contains classic photographic positions as well as multimedia contributions. Jean Baptiste Ganne and Eric Frost Tabuchi present non-conformistic images, which can be interpreted as sarcastic "clin d´ils"; the visually strong images of Aïcha Hamu, Maxime Matray and Natacha Lesueur play with first impressions which turn their significance; Gemma Shedden works with promises of seduction which will not be redeemed; Jean Robert Cuttaïa and Sandie Tourle explore the manipulatic potential of images and photography ; Jan Kopp´s Internet-based work is socially motivated and poses questions about existing systems and Stefan Nikolaev´s video is a reference to art history. This ten positions form a intense "clin d´il" of two very special art associations and spaces in Paris and Nice.
