Masterpieces of Photographic Art

Masterpieces of Photographic Art – The Vollmer Collection
showcases a museum collection of well-known photographs. But on closer inspection, these supposedly familiar original masterpieces prove confusing, featuring a mixture of ironic referencing and affectionate homage. The question of the original, its place within the art market, and the appreciation of photography is broached all over again.
Wolfgang Vollmer’s works address the medium of photography in a variety of ways. Rather than capturing and recording a particular scene, it is more about collecting, researching, re-evaluating and replicating. Wolfgang Vollmer examines the conditions intrinsic to the media, dissolving the apparently self-evident facts and then reconstructing them in a controlled manner. Here photography is about questioning reality, perception, and artistic subjectivity.

survived.

Here photography is about exploring our own role models, our wanted and unwanted companions. What is the role, the significance, of the people who in one way or another have accompanied, shaped, and influenced our lives? The personalised portrayal gives the photographer space for a reappraisal and contextualisation.
