Book Launch »Totes Gebirge«, Vienna
It’s a big, but surprisingly light book for two difficult subjects: Death and grief. The photographs were taken over a period of thirteen years. Johann Schoiswohl shows mountain landscapes, Agnes Prammer wet plate portraits, interspersed with an essay by Sandra Gugić and a text by Stephen Zepke.
Like mourning itself, it is a back and forth; an up and down. The reader’s expectations are built up and unexpectedly broken. »You never walk alone«. The book and the materials allow for transparency and multiple layers. Nothing is revealed quickly. The book has a certain fragility about it. And its unusual thinness and flexibility also contradict the canon of the typical photo book. The artist’s book was designed by Christine Zmölnig (sensomatic).
