For five years, Hungarian artist Lilla Szász worked with women in shelters. She photographed older women, young criminal girls and homeless mothers. The leitmotif of the project was to find out how women in such extreme circumstances can still find (life) joy.
In “Daughters”, Szász specifically asked young women who had committed crimes what “beauty” meant to them. The photographer gave the young women the freedom of staging and accordingly they presented themselves in a way they wanted to be seen. The result is their very own personal image of happiness and a better life.
Lilla Szász, *1977 in Budapest, Hungary. Lives and works in Budapest.
