22/08/21–29/08/25 describes the period during which Vienna-based artist Vanessa Kuegerl photographed the festival audience in Hofstallgasse from the very same window.
The sequence of images does not follow a chronological order, but is instead arranged according to visual correspondences.
Repetition and variation reorganise this microcosm, revealing what about it is not specific to Salzburg, but structural. The narrowing of the gaze, as described by Sibylle Berg in the foreword, makes a small world with its own rules visible. Class, tradition and belonging are inscribed in the visitors’ posture, clothing and gestures. Kuegerl explores this mechanism without commenting on it.
