Circulation is Roger Palmer’s second monograph after Overseas (Fotohof edition 2004), and once again it addresses complex issues relating to the representation and possible misinterpretation of landscape and its inscribed cultural codes. As the British artist explains, his landscapes are not about describing the world; they are “much more about bringing together different fragments of the world into one location, and that location is the photographic picture plane” (Palmer). His book presents three carefully sequenced groups of works – Circulation, Latitude, and Meridian – made over the past ten years on specially routed journeys in Europe, Africa, North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Asia. The book also includes an interview with Lisa le Feuvre, art historian at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, and an essay by Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain in London, in which she recalls her experiences as the artist’s travelling companion on a journey through South Africa.
