EX.IN depicts puzzle pictures of opposites, moments in which one aspect occurs in another, only to be reversed or entirely absorbed. It is based on a text by Frank Horstmann on the first signs of art and culture in the history of mankind, i.e. prehistoric art. It features first the most fundamental connection there is between inside and out, namely birth and its function in the development of sociality. Volume 2 of EX IN is then comprised of works by students at two private schools of photography. The artists published in Volume I held a number of workshops with students from the Atelier Reflexe (Paris/Montreuil) (headed by Véronique Bourgoin and Juli Susin) and the School for Artistic Photography in Vienna (run by Friedl Kubelka). The Reflexe research studio for photography has always had an interest in methods of visual interpretation; they concentrate first and foremost on life’s unforeseen events and portray them as contradictory details.
