Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1964 film Il deserto rosso (The Red Desert), made in the industrial region around Ravenna, is one of the key works in film history. Particularly due to its innovative color design, the work holds a multitude of points of contact for filmmakers, artists, and photographers. This is also reflected in the book, which features over 30 participants who respond to Il deserto rosso in their current works using the means of the photographic series. The images addressed include landscape and urban moments, related to the local situation around Ravenna. Also presented are color-analytical approaches that reflect narrative structures in photography and film and those that illuminate atmospheric echoes – quoting the color of time – from a contemporary perspective.
