Congress of Photography in Vienna
44 Essays and Texts

To mark its 30th anniversary the European Society for the History of Photography organised an international Congress featuring many keynote speakers, and it has now published its results in book form. The Congress focused on a critical examination of photographic image perception from a topical, transdisciplinary perspective. Within the context of the visual glut of images generated by our globalised society, concepts and effects of photographic images are analysed and explanation models discussed. The book looks at three main topic areas: Photographic History and the Variable Image. Use and Manipulation of the Picture as an Aspect of our Visual Culture // Models, Concepts and Strategies for Private and Public Photographic Collections // Photography and its Interaction with the Fine Arts and the Sciences.

The publication comprises 44 text contributions by internationally renowned scientists, major private collectors and representatives of leading institutions such as MOMA, New York, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.

With contributions by, among others: Anna Auer, Vladimir Birgus, Xavier Canonne, Alistair Crawford, Michael Gray, Rosina Herrera, Katherine Hoffman, Anton Holzer, André Jammes, Steven Franklin Joseph, Rolf H.
