The aim of this book is to publish the project “Portraits, Salzburg, 2021”, commissioned by Salzburg Museum and realized by Nadine Weixler & Peter Schreiner. Conceived as a contribution to the exhibition “Salzburg einzigartig” (Salzburg Unique), the two collaborating artists created a series of images that used the means of portrait photography to depict the geographically well-defined historical centre of the city of Salzburg, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. In order to create a photographic image, of whatever kind, of a society whose members were present due to their place of residence, workplace or other circumstances, the practical realization of the project was preceded by a public call for participation, as a result of which forty-eight portraits were taken in a studio, set up for this purpose at Salzburg Museum. This series of photographs can be seen as an ambivalent collection of socially mostly decontextualized images of people, as an experimental portrait of a specific, historic space, or as situated somewhere between the image of a city and that of its inhabitants.
