“Sozial Romantismus” establishes Vèronique Bourgoin’s bizarre world of the unconscious. Her protagonists are sent on a somnambulistic journey, in the course of which they have to master several tests and sometimes small disasters as well. By interfering directly and manually in the photographic reproduction process the artist is able to reach beyond perspective and scale and remove herself from time. Her very insistence upon the poetic power of photography through the experiment puts her close to the classical avant-garde of the 1920es.
