In his subtle and insistent photographic examinations Werner Kaligofsky is interested in the demolition and, at the same time, the reconstruction of history through images. To this end he uses carefully selected photographic or film images as material which he processes and edits in different stages to highlight a hidden and at times unconscious political bias to these image montages. All his works are aimed at the “problematisation of the way in which the process of perception itself actually works” (Monika Faber). It is only through this process of critical cognition triggered by Kaligofsky that the political dimensions in which he is interested are brought to light.
