Gerhard Treml
Data City
Gerhard Treml, born in Salzburg in 1963, uses the language of statistics in his works. He uses it as an instrument to appropriate the reality of Los Angeles. The artist – who is also a trained psychologist – understands statistics as a generalisable “truth-appearance”, which partly ironises the handling of statistical facts and also explores their limits.
For his project, he used photographic means to create “random samples” in which he photographed residents of Los Angeles and turned them into photo dummies. In this way, Treml made visible what is usually stored in databases.
