Julius Deutschbauer
(noch kleben die plakate…)*
For more than 30 years, Julius Deutschbauer has been developing a complex artistic oeuvre that is always up-to-date and highly visible in the form of posters. The 213 self-commissioned posters presented in their entirety in this exhibition show the artist as a permanent observer of social developments. He takes a satirical look at questions of politics, language and the media.
As with many performance artists, photography is a decisive medium in the realization of his works. Deutschbauer on the poster, always looking serious, with texts and comments on the political situation, but also on exhibitions, performances and festivals, becomes an iconic art figure, reproduced thousands of times and displayed in public and private spaces. His self-dramatization sometimes reaches the point of embarrassment and always leaves the viewer open to opposing interpretations.
