Josef Pausch from Linz, who is being presented in his first major solo exhibition of photographs and photo sequences from 1978 – 1982, has been confronting photography for almost a decade as an intellectual and visual adventure to be understood in the context of art. He has optical intelligence and great sensitivity at his disposal and is aware of the degree of abstraction that distances every photograph from reality, as well as the full subjectivity inherent in every photograph, not just the artistically sophisticated ones. His interest in the manifestations of 20th century visual art has favored and influenced his way of seeing and interpreting reality in the image.
