Otto Umbehr

The FOTOHOF presents the work of the multimedia German artist Otto Umbehr, known as »Umbo«. In 1928, he co-founded DEPHOT, one of the first photo agencies in the world. In the 1920s, he was regarded as the »enfant terrible« of early photojournalism. After 1945, he tried to continue the Bauhaus photography style and worked for various English and German magazines. In 1957 he became a photography teacher in Bad Pyrmont, but his own photographic work fell into oblivion. In the 1970s, shortly before his death in 1980, Umbo was rediscovered and honored.
