(…) The world as Kai Kuss sees it is in a permanent laboratory situation: an experiment which once held great promise but whose outcome is no longer of interest to anyone. Perhaps because one has had to accept with gritted teeth that the subject of observation is too vast to be understood – especially by a constituent part of it which takes such great enjoyment in assuming a superior position. Accordingly Kai Kuss’s oeuvre offers all manner of close-ups and prospects of its subject, yet no insights. (…)Whether Kuss is showing us animals in an urban setting that look like shadows of people, or shadows of people that offer themselves like pissed-upon bunches of human flowers to then indulge in sexual acts like sexual funerals: There is nothing in the forlorn perspective of his photographs to show what is human and whether flies that reproduce are more human than wolves that constantly re-enact hierarchies, whether abandoned purpose-built structures say more about human nature than exploding interiors.
