The publication commissioned by the Salzburg Museum and the City of Salzburg, Department of Culture, Education and Knowledge, is an anthology of artistic works that featured in Salzburg’s urban space from the late 1940s to the early 1970s, photographed by Rainer Iglar. As diverse examples of art in the city, most of these works are the symptomatic expression of responses formal and aesthetic, iconographic and programmatic, functional and intentional to particular locations as well as specific commissions, prizes and competitions. The book also highlights the difference between the existence, presence and visibility of these artworks within the city. They belong to the urban landscape without actually being perceived as a contribution to the city’s culture. Many subsequently disappear without a trace, often unnoticed. In this sense the book is a documentary, but also a project of visualisation and discourse about the present status of a chapter in Salzburg’s more recent art history.
